El Salto Angel (Kerepakupai-merú) is the largest waterfall in the world with a drop of 1005 m. from the top of Auyantepui to 2580 m. on sea level. In this region live the Indians Kamaratas and 10km from the foot of Angel Falls is the Indian village of Uruyen. This waterfall is located in the Canaima National Park, in Bolivar state.
In 1937, an American pilot Jimmie Angel (1899-1056) was in the area in search of gold, and had to make an emergency landing his plane on top of Auyantepui. It was then that the area became known as the American pilot, who was with his wife and two companions, discovered the largest waterfall in the world.
