






The jungles of southern Venezuela are characterized by different biological communities, and often unique, and is known for high levels of endemism. More than 700 bird species and more than 20 endemic species, live in southern Venezuela. Perhaps one of the main characteristics of the physiographic features of tepui area is a term used by the indigenous Pemon the table mountains with vertical walls and summits cheers mostly flat. The Tepuyes have a biological species unique to a place not found anywhere else in the world.
Day 1: We will have one hour flight to Puerto Ordaz, located south of the legendary river Orinoco. Then, on the road to El Palmar, passing through various places to watch birds. Between open dry forests and wetlands, several species of interest can be seen, including Purple Gallinule, Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle, White-eyed parakeet, Striped Cuckoo, Slaty Antshrike, Painted Tody-Flycatcher, Chestnut Conebill vent and many more. In humid areas, yellow-chested Crake is often seen. We spend the next two nights at the Parador Taguapire in El Palmar.
Day 2: Rio Grande, home of the Harpies Imataca forest reserve, is a special area that features an incredible variety of wildlife. Though it has been exploited by logging companies and gold miners in recent years, is still quite pristine and untouched. This forest has perhaps the densest population of Harpy Eagles in Venezuela and is probably the best place to see birds. After our encounter with the Harpies, we will continue our birding adventure in search of other interesting species such as Crimson Topaz, Racket-tailed Coquette, Plain-backed Spinetail, Toucanet Guiana buco white collar, sequin Cotinga of Long-tailed Tyrant, Green Oriole, Magpie Tanager, among many others. Day 3: Imataca to tepuyes and Gran Sabana After bird watching, go to the top of Rio Grande, then we drive five hours to the home of all bird lovers in Venezuela, Strawberry Barquilla hostel. With several bird feeders and trails and orchards, Barquilla is a place to observe the wonders of the rainforest birds. Here we can enjoy a beer or coffee in the garden while watching the evening program by the search because many species feed in the garden. More than 10 species of hummingbirds visit the feeder, including Sabrewing gray breast, Pico Largo Starthroat, Crimson Topaz, and Fork-tailed Woodnymph. Also, in the trees until you can see Cayenne Jay, Purple-breasted Cotinga, Channel-billed Toucan, and Parrot. Accommodation will be in an inn for three nights loscal to fully exploit the many opportunities to observe birds in the area.
Day 4, 5, 6: Sheets, Tepuyes, jungle, mountains, and during these three days, we will explore the Sierra de Lema at several levels high, and the lowland rainforest and the top of the Gran Sabana, consist mainly in the afternoon to observe trees and mountain plains alternating and gallery forests at an altitude of 1,400 meters. Tepui Goldenthroat, Great Elaenia, Black-faced Tanager, and wedge-tailed Grass-Finch are among the birds found there. Then, as we descend through the Sierra de Lema (The Ladder), we find an incredible vegetation and equally cute birds: Guyana Cock of the Rock, white-bearded Ringers, Scarlet Tepui horns and Jumping, and Tepuy-Grackle mountain with his song-like harp. We can also see Olive Backed, Yellow-bellied Tanangers, Paradise, and mottled, Flutist Wren, Tepui Spinetail, Rosa Piha neck and greenlet Tepui. Once in the lowlands, we could detect Capuchinbird, Pompador Cotinga, Red-billed Toucan, Black-faced Hawk, and many nests, jumpers, and flycatchers.
Day 7: Back to civilization in the early morning, we will walk the path of the car Strawberry, there are going to be able to find Aegypius Antshrike, Black-spotted Barbet, Golden-headed Manakin and neck buco. After a period of observation of birds in the morning, we said goodbye to Henry Cleve, the owner of Barquilla. We have a six-hour trip ahead of us to take the flight back to the central coast, with a transfer to hotel.
Day 8: Return to Caracas, home to what we hope is a myriad of fond memories of an unforgettable trip.
